Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
