The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
